The Power of Belief

The Power of Belief

Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask in prayer BELIEVE that you have received it, and it will be yours Mark 11:24 ESV

How many times have we heard this verse from our pastors or read it in our daily scripture reading. But what does it really mean? What do we need to know to really understand what Jesus is telling us?

The Laws of the universe are steadfast and can never fail. They are unchangeable and exact as they manifest the beliefs of individuals or on a larger scale a community or the world. We have been given an incredible gift to choose our beliefs. If we become aware of the enormous power that we possess in every thought, we become creators of our circumstances. Our power to consciously choose our beliefs, can radically improve the quality of our lives.

From the healing of disease, to the length of our lives, to the success of our careers and relationships, everything that we experience as “life” is directly linked to what we believe. To change our lives and relationships, heal our bodies, and bring peace to our families and nations requires a simple yet precise shift in the way we use belief. Our beliefs have the power to change the flow of events in the universe- literally to interrupt and redirect time, matter, and space, and the events that occur within them.   (Braden, 2008) If we want to change our lives we must change our thoughts. Our beliefs are manifest in the reality of our lives.

Our thoughts and the emotions that accompany our feelings change us at the cellular level and impact the world around us. We were created with this knowledge written in our hearts and knowing how to use this power. The Gospel of Thomas quotes Jesus as saying “If you bring forth what is within you, what you bring forth will save you.”

The role of our subconscious in our belief system

Your subconscious mind stores your beliefs and experiences. You may have beliefs that you have received from parents, teachers or others. These thoughts may be negative and not allowing you to attract the beliefs that will empower your life. Sometimes you have to learn to re-program your subconscious mind. One way to do this is to use your powerful imagination to create thoughts that attract the beliefs that are positive to your life. Visualize what you want to attract into your life and this will convert your thoughts into reality.

Is Science Catching up with God’s Word?

We are all familiar with the placebo effect. The patient is led to believe that they are receiving a treatment for their particular illness, when in fact they are receiving something that has no healing properties.

Harvard researcher Dr. Ted Kaptchuk published a study in Science Translation Medicine. He found that the placebo effect greatly enhanced pain relief in migraine sufferers who had the expectation they were getting an effective drug, compared to when they took the active drug with the incorrect label “placebo.” More surprising, however, is that the patients reported significant pain relief, compared to an untreated migraine attack, even when they knew they had swallowed nothing more than a sugar pill. (Barton, 2014)

Dodie Osteen was diagnosed with metastatic cancer of the liver in 1981. She was a young lady in the prime of her life. They told her she had only a few weeks to live. Dodie went home with her husband John who was a pastor. She relates in her book Healed of Cancer that she had many people praying for her but she soon realized that her healing was a personal matter between her and Jesus. She had an inward voice that told her it was HER FAITH that she had to rely on. She was sick and weighed only 89 pounds but kept up her normal routine and did not allow any unbelief to enter her mind. She and her husband prayed and she pled her case with Jesus. The Bible said in Psalms 118:17 “I will not die but live and declare the works of the Lord”. Dodie practiced forgiveness and said the Word became her life. She read healing scriptures at least three times a day. The Word flooded her conscious and unconscious mind. That was thirty-five years ago and Dodie’s faith and beliefs served her well. She has a thriving ministry at Lakewood Church in Houston and is an example of what Jesus meant when he said whatever you BELIEVE you will have it.
